STYLE GUIDE | ISSUE 02
Styling children is no walk in the park, so we asked the experts for some tips. Their advice? Get your children involved in outfit choices (but be tactical about it!), don't be afraid to turn down hand-me-downs if they're not your style, and invest in items that can be mixed and matched into whole new outfits to get more bang for your buck.
Look out for the sales! Kids clothes get heavily discounted so buy a season in advance for the best bargains. I always invest in the pieces they will wear every day like coats and footwear. The items they wear all the time have to last so it’s worth paying a bit more for good quality products. Another consideration is don’t forget the basics! Choose a few key colours for their wardrobe, say four, then mix with black, white and grey basics – you’ll find you get a lot more wear out of everything as opposed to ending up with lots of mismatched bright/printed items that don’t look good with anything else.
I'm a massive fan of leggings. They are unisex, comfortable, available in great patterns and won’t break the bank. They also look great with trainers. I also always have a spare jumpsuit or onesie in my bag as an easy emergency outfit change.
Don’t buy anything that’s ‘itchy’. If I buy knitwear it's very soft and cosy. Harlow knows just by looking at something if it's going to be itchy or not. Harlow likes to think she’s had some kind of input in choosing what she’s wearing, so I let her choose with me if I’m looking online and in the morning I sometimes get 2 or 3 outfits out and ask her to choose which one she would like to wear. She has a strong opinion, so giving her choice just makes life easier! Harlen will let me put absolutely anything on him, he’s yet to say ‘he doesn’t like it’.
Don't worry about offending family who pass you down clothes. Up until Wilf was 6 months old I felt like I had to put him in all the tops with diggers on them even though I hated them!
