Stellar Artists for Your Kid’s Room

Decorating your nursery is one of the greater delights of having a bub. You get to pick colour schemes and choose décor. Sure, the room is for the li’l un, but let’s be honest. The fun is in putting your own stamp on their new abode.

Paintings and artwork are a boon to all soon-to-be parents designing their first kids’ room (and their second, and their third!). Having striking prints on the walls can provoke creativity and imagination in your child.

And that’s not to mention they will brighten up a room where, let’s be honest, you’ll be spending a large part of your nights to come.

There are some stellar kids artists out there, from famed illustrator Quentin Blake, whose drawings are familiar to any fan of Roald Dahl, to Eric Carle, artist of The Hungry Caterpillar and E.H. Shepard, creator of our beloved classic Winnie the Pooh.

But here are some other kids’ artists whose prints would look wicked on your children’s walls.

Alison Lester

We’ll start with an Aussie favourite – Alison Lester. If you recognise the name it’s because she’s written popular kids’ books Are We There Yet, Imagine and Magic Beach, among plenty more.

And if you grew up on these books as we did, you might love to bring your kids into the Lester club with a beautiful wall print straight out of the pages of your favourite tome.

Louise Tate

Louise Tate is an award-winning British illustrator whose original paintings of animals are certain to stand out on your bub’s wall; if you take a look at her gorgeous print below, I'm sure you can see why.

Not only does this talented artist sell her art at Harrods and Selfridges (among others) in the UK, but Louise has been highly commended by the MacMillan Prize for Children’s Illustration a whopping four times! What's more, she's just had three books published by Jellycat.

Louise Tate’s artwork E is for ElephantLouise Tate’s artwork, such as this E is for Elephant, is famous for its animal-within-animal feature.

Graeme Base

Who doesn’t love Graeme Base’s animal murals? His popular book Animalia has sold more than three million copies worldwide.

On his website you can buy original prints, but they’re bound to set you back a couple of k, so scoot on over instead to his limited edition prints and soon you can be appreciating his highly detailed work on one of your unwelcome 3am wake up calls.

Marini Ferlazzo

Still on the topic of animals, we were in awe when we came across Nathan Ferlazzo’s evocative artwork of wildlife. His monochrome pen and ink images of nature are the classy option on your kid’s wall, but we think they’re kind of timeless: once they’re up, they won’t come down for a long time.

Even better, Marini Ferlazzo donates a portion of each print sale to animal welfare organisations such as World Animal Protection.

Delilah Devine

Delilah Devine has a gorgeous online shop of homewares designs, including bright and colourful kids’ prints and other wall art. Just make sure you don’t get distracted by the gorgeous jewellery for yourself. That’s not what you came here for!

Your child

No child’s room is complete without their own addition to their walls (preferably not crayon directly on the wall!).

Your kids will get a tickle out of seeing their own squiggles framed and placed centrepiece in their room. You can create a timeline of drawings for every year of their childhood, or replace the pic every year.

Of course, this piece of wall art is the ultimate reflection of your child’s passions, so you might just have to let go of the idea of neat and clean décor to let their creativity reign.
