Toddlers are on the go from the minute their little feet hit the floor in the morning until the second their head hits the pillow at night. During that time, they are always looking for new and fun things to get into. So why not provide them with things that are fun, educational and hands-on? We love the following activities for teaching your little ones important skills they will need as they get older.

1. Divide by Color

Use muffin tins, egg cartons, or small plastic organizers and have your toddler divide items by color. Pom poms, buttons, or other small colorful objects fit well in each of the compartments and are easy to find around your house. Add a twist by having them count the number of objects as they put them in. This can help them hone their addition and subtraction skills in a fun way.

2. Shaving Cream Shenanigans

If you want to give your kids a fun (and a little messy!) sensory activity, shaving cream can provide hours of entertainment. Let them draw with it or even wear it if they please. Clear off your kitchen counter or table and cover it with wax paper or parchment paper. Spread out the shaving cream and step back to let your kiddos dive in!

3. Felt Board Fun

Felt has been around for ages for good reason! It's great to use on a cold wintery day when the littles are stuck inside. You can cut out a variety of different shapes, houses, cars, trees, signs, anything at all your children dream up. Attach a larger piece of felt to a cork bulletin board and your kids can create any number of pictures and designs. When they get tired of it, just peel it off and start all over. Encourage your kids to get creative and make up stories about their pictures in a show and tell format. Snap a picture and let them tell their stories to others later!

4. Bath Paints

Put shaving cream in each cup of a 12-muffin tin and add food coloring to create a variety of colors. When bath time comes, let the kids use the shaving cream paint to decorate themselves, each other, the walls, and even you if you're up for it! Draw designs on the shower walls or give one another a blue beard or a yellow moustache. Bath time is the perfect time to get a little messy before you start to clean up.

5. Scavenger Hunt

Create a scavenger hunt using items of different shapes and colors and add in counting to the mix if your child is learning their numbers. For example, tell your child to go and find five yellow circles or three blue objects. Add your recently lost items on their list as well. Who knows what your kids may find!

During the winter, toddlers can get increasingly bored when they start to tire of playing with the same old toys. Get rid of the winter blues! Create a few learning games that both your toddlers and older children will enjoy. Remember, all fun things don't always come from a box.
