3 Fabulous Family Den Hideaways in Europe

The latest in our kid-friendly holiday series stays in the Northern Hemisphere. We’ve already checked out some hot family vacation ideas in the UK. Now we head to mainland Europe with i-escape to find some valuable European spots to take the kids for a break.

There’s nothing better than children having the space and freedom to come up with inventive, imaginative play.

The unrivalled i-escape’s Kids Collection has a selection of wonderful family-friendly properties which offer somewhere for kids to recreate being shipwrecked, enact Hansel and Gretel living in the woods, or imagine themselves in a bygone era. Nadine, the Kids Collection’s Editor, suggests 3 of the best:

Calcot Manor Hotel, Gloucestershire, UK

All the ingredients for a super family holiday are in the mix here. Parent pampering? Try the spa, outdoor hot tub, haute cuisine in the candlelit conservatory (all family suites have an inbuilt monitor and babysitting is on offer), or choose from a range of activities from clay pigeon shooting to horse-riding.

Kids going wild? And no wonder, with the excitement of crafts and cookery classes for early years, the Playzone packed with toys, the Mez with computers and Playstations, Xboxes and Wiis, plus playground, tennis courts, bikes to borrow, mini football pitch, assault course and both indoor (heated) and outdoor pools.

Further outdoor fun is to be had with den building and trying out the woodland gymnasium, and pirate playship.

Le Castel, Normandy, France

This 19th-century chateau in spacious parkland has four large two-bedroom suites (as well as a couple of self-catering suites in the former stables) and offers laid-back house party-style holidays, best appreciated by families with younger children.

Rates include communal evening meals 6 nights out of 7 including family barbecues at weekends, and kids’ suppers at 5pm.

There are fun organised events in the school holidays from cake baking to picnics, swings, trampoline, croquet and sandpit, a play marquee stuffed with toys and games in the summer, and a woodland den as well as a gypsy caravan to discover.

Fellah Hotel, near Marrakech, Morocco

A mere 15 minutes from airport is this colourful Bohemian retreat and cultural centre set in 21 acres of lush gardens with a choice of swimming pools (the main one is heated).

Grown-ups come here to soak up the sunshine and events on offer, and relax in the Thai spa, while their offspring enjoy an original programme of specialised workshops in school holidays (focused on cooking, culture and the countryside), the mini petting zoo, table tennis and volleyball court.

The kids get not one but two hideaways to explore: a super cool tree house, and an old yellow Mercedes to clamber over in the playground.
